- Sharpen the flat face, not the top. Keep the original bevel angle—normally around 15 to 20 degrees. If you change the angle, you change the cut geometry and the bit will burn wood.
- Take light strokes. You're removing a small amount of material to get a clean edge, not reshaping the bit. Ten light passes beats three heavy ones.
- Test on scrap. Run the bit on a piece of waste wood. If it burns, tears, or vibrates, stop and look again.
