If you're the person signing off on tool orders, you know the routine: blades dull, bits snap, and someone needs a specific size that's never in the bin. What was the smart buy in 2020 isn't necessarily the smart buy in 2026. The basics—cut quality, tool life, operator time—haven't changed. The math around consumables has. These are the questions I hear most often, and the answers I usually give, minus the swearing.

I don't pretend to speak for every shop. Diablo happens to be what we standardize on for several products because the cost-per-use numbers line up. Your shop may be different.

Grinding wheels use a similar abrasive but in a thicker, denser matrix. Flap discs are layered abrasive cloth on a fiberglass backing. Diamond blades are a steel core with diamond segments on the edge.

Why should a buyer care? Because the material drives the price and the performance. A diamond blade can cost five times as much as an aluminum oxide wheel, but if you're cutting concrete and rebar all week, the diamond blade is cheaper by the second Tuesday.
