1. Dull or cheap carbide is the #1 killer
A sharp carbide-tipped blade can keep cutting cleanly for hundreds of linear feet. A budget blade with questionable steel loses its edge far sooner. The blade stops cutting and starts burning. If you have to push harder to make the cut, the blade is already gone. Don't buy a new saw yet—try a new blade first.
2. You might have the wrong tooth count
A 12-inch miter saw blade isn't one product. It's a family of products. A 24-tooth blade clears material fast and leaves a rough finish—right for framing. A 60-tooth blade is for general finish work. An 80-tooth blade is for fine trim and clean edges. If you're making finish cuts with a coarse framing blade, you'll get tear-out and burn marks no matter how much you paid for the saw.
3. The arbor size has to match your saw
A blade with the wrong arbor diameter wobbles. Wobble means sloppy cuts, vibration, and a blade that wears unevenly. Check the specs before mounting anything.
That's also where I've become skeptical of brands that don't list specs. The FTC's advertising rules (ftc.gov) require product claims to be truthful and substantiated. So when a no-name blade says "maximum performance" but doesn't list tooth count, hook angle, or material grade, I read that as a red flag. In my experience, brands that stand behind their product put the numbers on the box.
The Door Hinges Were the Same Story, Just Smaller
Doors kept coming loose. We assumed it was cheap hinges. The hinges were fine—the screws were wrong. I'd been bulk-ordering drywall screws because they were cheap and always in stock. - Open the old tool box. Actually look at what's inside. A dull blade, a stripped bit, or a box of drywall screws might be the root cause of problems you've been blaming on tools and doors.
- Ask for specs before you buy. Material grade, tooth count, hook angle. If a product won't tell you, move on. Apply the same standard the FTC applies to advertising claims: if it can't be substantiated, it doesn't count.
- Standardize on a brand with a consistent line. That's the calculation that matters. The saw is not the problem, and the door is not the problem. The accessory is. Fix that, and your old tool box becomes what it was always supposed to be: a box of tools, not a box of excuses.
