Tool Accessory Comparison: What a 6-Year Cost Audit Revealed About Blades, Wrenches, Screwdrivers, and Hole Saws
The Setup: Why This Comparison Exists

Our trim crew ran through roughly 40 blades a year on general framing and finish work. When we were buying budget blades at $18-22 each, average life was about 2.5 weeks before tear-out got bad enough that someone would quietly swap it. Fastening Tools: Stubby Screwdriver Sets — The Access Argument
Here's the honest version: I resisted buying stubby screwdriver sets for two years because the standard-length set we had was "fine." It was not fine.
What I didn't account for was the number of fasteners our techs were reaching with an extension, an offset driver, or — worse — a drill with a driver bit that stripped more heads than it turned. Stripped screws mean drilling them out, which means damaged trim plates, which means reorders.
A decent stubby screwdriver set runs $25-45. A stripped-head fix on a control panel or trim plate averages $40-90 depending on parts, plus the 20-30 minutes of tech time.
After the third time our lead tech said "I need a stubby for this," I ordered two sets. That was 2022. We've replaced one flathead bit since — the rest are original. I'm not sure why the stubby form factor doesn't get more attention in tool purchasing, but my best guess is that it's a visibility problem: nobody plans for the tight-space job until they're already in it.

Hole Saws: What Size for 1/2" EMT?

For 1/2" EMT (electrical metallic tubing), you need a 7/8" hole saw.
Why the confusion? Because 1/2" refers to the trade size, not the outside diameter. Actual OD on 1/2" EMT is about 0.706". Electrical code requires a knockout sized for the connector's threaded hub, which for standard 1/2" connectors is 7/8".
We had a job in early 2023 where a tech ran 3/4" holes for 1/2" EMT connectors because he eyeballed it. Every hole had to be reamed out or the panel replaced. Fifteen holes, a $340 panel, and six hours of labor. That's a $712 mistake that started as a "we don't need to look up the chart" decision.

What I'd Actually Recommend
The pattern across all four categories is consistent: the premium option wins when you count the rework, not when you count the receipt.
- Cutting tools (Diablo D1080N and similar): Go premium when finish matters or when tear-out creates rework. Budget blades for rough cuts where nobody inspects the edge.
- 12-inch pliers wrench: Premium pays off if you routinely work fittings that need leverage. If you don't, buy the smaller size and don't overbuy.
- Stubby screwdriver set: Almost always premium. The category is small enough that quality differences are cheap to buy and expensive to skip.
- Hole saws: Size accuracy beats blade quality. Get a 7/8" for 1/2" EMT, label it, and stop arguing about it in the field.
Take this with a grain of salt — every shop's mix is different, and your TCO spreadsheet should look different from ours. But if your books have a "rework" column that never gets traced back to accessory purchases, you're probably paying more for cheap tools than you would for the good ones.
