The $1,200 Lesson That Made Me Standardize on Diablo Saw Blades
At 7:15 on a Tuesday in June, I sent a supplier an angry email about an $83 line item on an invoice. By the end of the quarter, I had ordered fourteen more of them.
That line item was a Diablo circular saw blade D1084L. The email got deleted. The blade stayed in our finish kit.
I'm the procurement manager for an 18-person general contracting company. I've managed our tool and material budget—about $180,000 a year—for six years. I keep the cost tracking system. I compare vendor quotes. I'm the person who asks why we're buying a third sledge hammer when we already have two.

The Audit I Should Have Run Years Ago
When I calmed down, I pulled every blade purchase from 2023 out of our cost tracking system. The total for circular saw blades was about $4,700. Not a huge number next to a $180,000 budget. But the blade line wasn't the problem. It was the cost of the incidents around those blades.
In 2023, we had at least four finish-related do-overs involving material damage. Plus dozens of trips to the supply house for a 'better blade' mid-job. Why the D1084L Ended My 'One Blade Fits All' Habit

The Hole Saw Mix-Up

What I'd Tell Another Cost Controller
If you're managing a budget and someone tells you a premium blade is 'worth it,' check their math before you check the price. Ask what it does to rework, labor time, and material waste. If the numbers hold up, respect them.
I'm not saying expensive is always better. I'm saying 'one size fits all' is usually a lie, and the sooner you identify what each tool is for, the fewer surprises you'll buy.
A vendor that says 'this isn't the right blade for that material' wins my trust. In my opinion, that's what specialization looks like. It doesn't mean you need to own every specialty tool. You just need to know which ones pay for themselves.
